Just horrific!

Yes, I'm talking about powered milk in coffee. I'm also talking about trying to spell POWDERED...

My favorite "milk-type-replacement-thing" to put in coffee is So Delicious Vanilla-flavored Organic Coconut "Milk" (and they bandy that word "milk" about really freely).

It only costs about 1700 dollars more than a carton of regular dairy milk, or even almond "milk". But I love how it tastes and I especially love it in my coffee. Unfortunately this morning, at 5:53 AM, I discovered I only had enough coconut "milk" for my (Kashi Crisp) cereal. (Jesus! What the hell happened to those days of cigarettes & booze for breakfast??? All I know is that my life was a whole lot more exciting back then...) Yes, I digress.

Anyway, I started panicking. I can't drink black coffee unless it's a serious situation, like a yellow or orange level alert. Something incredibly urgent like that; then I'll drink black coffee because then it becomes all about mainlining caffeine and not about culinary enjoyment. (At a red level alert, I eat instant coffee crystals right out of the jar, hit the ground running and then just pray that I'll find potable water somewhere to wash it all down.)

The last time this happened to me (meaning when I ran out of milk b/c I'd forgotten to go to the store), I broke out the one can of evaporated milk that I always have on hand in the pantry for baking emergency pumpkin pies. I never replaced that can of milk, so this morning, after rummaging high & low, all I could find was a lone 3-year-old pouch of powdered milk -- the serious emergency milk. So I made up a pitcher and put some in my cup of perked coffee and almost gagged. Christ, it tastes horrible. I think the only way to survive this will be by brushing my teeth after every swallow.

All I can say is, I hope I don't live to see the day when things get so dire that I'll be grateful for even a thimbleful of coffee that tastes like this.

I had the BEST DREAM last night, gang!!

I dreamed (yet again) that Keith Richards was staying at my house and we were incredibly close friends. Just unbelievably close. And we did stuff together --mostly mundane stuff, inside the house; although at one point, we went out and took a walk.

This was Keith circa 1969, when he was about 25 years old or so. The same Keith that loyal readers of this lofty blog no doubt recall I dreamed about this past winter -- in that dream, he was once again staying with me and we were incredibly close friends and he accidentally set my house on fire and cheerfully asked me for some M&M's while he tried to put out the fire with my garden hose...

I love dreaming about Keith!! And on the equinox, even. Perhaps it's an important sign that life is going to get fun again. I guess we'll see. (Of course, it's not too auspicious that I followed up that great, fun dream with a truly lousy cup of coffee, is it?)

Okay. I have to stop babbling here and get back to work. I am STILL reformatting the italics in the new novel for the Kindle edition. I am only halfway done. I work at it until my eyes get so bleary I have to shut down the computer, turn out all the lights, and stare mindlessly at old Dick Van Dyke Show re-runs. (The good news, though, is that I finished the nursing school DVD script thingie and turned that in yesterday morning, so we're getting there. Closer to leaving for Europe, that is.)

I hope you're having a great Thursday wherever you are and whatever you're doing, gang! And I hope your coffee was totally perfect today. (Don't feel too bad for me, though, b/c in about 14 days, I'll be drinking my coffee in a small cafe along the Seine! Yay!!) See ya, gang. Thanks for visiting.
