I know I blog about this every year...

...but it's happening again, so I'll blog about it again!

It has to do with a memory I have of being in the 1st grade, late 1966. It was right before we moved away to a new house, a new school. It was early October in Cleveland, cool and rainy. My class took a little "field trip" around the block to look at autumn leaves.

We had on our raincoats and rain boots. To me, this was a breathtaking excursion; I loved autumn leaves and now October is my favorite month of the year. (I guess it's why I like to take my vacations in October instead of in the summer, when everybody else seems to like to go away.)

Nowadays, school starts so early in the season. It is already back in session around here and I find that so hard to comprehend. How can kids be back in school? It's still summer, for godsakes. Well, it rained again, all night long. And so this morning, as the sun "sort of" came up and I looked out the window and saw all the slick, wet streets & sidewalks, the reflection of the headlights & traffic lights in the wet pavement, the kids heading back to school in the light rain; I instantly remembered the joy of my childhood, of being 6, and that field trip we took on that rainy October morning.

Plus, it's still sort of cool outside -- low 70s. Cool for August, at any rate. And so it kind of felt like it could be October out there!

Isn't it interesting, gang, how the briefest sight of something can open a pocket of memories that can just flood you with so much happiness? (The thought of living it all over again is a total nightmare to me, but just having access to the really happy memories here & there -- it makes it all feel worthwhile.)

[My first elementary school -- I went to 3, total. But I went to kindergarten & about 6 weeks of 1st grade here at Rowland Elementary School.]
