Yes, the badger on my roof!

I live in a split level house (and it's 54 years old, but that's beside the point -- I love it in all its majestic antiquity!), so I have two levels of rooftops. One level of the roof overhangs my back deck and my sun room, and all 3 of the bedrooms overlook this roof. I usually keep those windows closed at night because cats wander around on that roof sometimes and my own cats then want to push through the screens, get out on the roof and ATTACK.

However, my own window I keep open a couple inches because I like to have things like AIR at night, not to mention have spiders coming and going at all hours. Wouldn't want to hinder them at all, god knows. Last night, at around 3 AM, Buster suddenly woke up and the suddenness of it woke me, too. Which is weird, because he sleeps down at the foot of the bed. Not, like, right next to me. I said, "What is it, Buster?" and yes: he was staring at the window above my head! (See a zillion of the other posts below.)

I hate when the cats do that. It usually means something I don't want to know about is directly behind me! Then Buster stealthily made -- yes! -- a bee-line for the window.  (See? I told you that bee-lines are not the sole property of bees!) So I sat up, thinking there was a cat out there, and naturally right outside my window, there was a badger eating mulberries!

Obviously, I closed the window right away. I startled it but not enough to make it feel threatened at all. It didn't run or anything. (Probably due to my non-threatening, cute cotton nightgown with flowers all over it.) I got out of bed to make sure Fluffy's window was closed all the way. Then I checked "Bill's" room, and that's when I saw the badger again. It was wandering to the other end of the roof, away from the mulberries. It looked right at me, in fact. You know how certain nocturnal animals have those creepy sort of glowing/reflective eyes? That sent a chill through me, but other than that, it didn't seem scary, really. I just hadn't been expecting to be lurched from sleep and presented with a badger. Then it laid down & got comfortable! It didn't go to sleep, it was just very contentedly looking out at the night. It just seemed to be really at peace with the world.

It's like I live in some sort of natural wild game preserve, or something, and not a little suburban neighborhood. Jesus. It's always something. I went back to bed wondering if my neighbors have these experiences, or is it just me? Is it because I find life so enrapturing that life keeps bringing itself to me in all its mystifying and unexpected guises? (I'm thinking the latter.) (I'm also thinking "the ladder" -- it would be nice to own a ladder.)

[Somewhat reasonable facsimile of my badger!]
