My mind is made up

I'm having my own little seance tonight to conjure the spirit of Maxwell Perkins and I intend to put him to work!

Jesus, what a luxury. And it wasn't even that long ago that even at the small presses, you'd have an editor who worked right along with you. Those days are gone. Now I have to edit myself and when it's your own work, it's not always easy to see when something has to be axed.

When I completed the first draft of the Valentino novel (550 pages,) it was with the understanding that an editor would eventually get hold of it and put a bunch of red marks all through it, giving me an idea of what needed changing or fixing or rearranging or deleting, and how I should work with the ending.

I never dreamed I'd be tackling it all by myself. Here's hoping you like my editing choices.

I'm tired now. I'm going to go watch Murder She Wrote.
