Okay, guess what??

MORE snow today, gang!! They're expecting about 3 more inches. What's odd is that I'll be back with that same client this afternoon -- the one who was having a small dinner party the last time it snowed and she asked if I'd help her chop a bunch of stuff and we had that great time so I didn't notice all that snow then it took me 45 minutes to drive about 4 miles...

Anyway, today I will keep my eye on those many windows and scoot out as soon as I see any "accumulation." Today, unbeknownst to her, I am going to ask her to do me a favor and read my Valentino novel & give me feedback. She loves books and is wildly well-read. Even though my book has already sold, I'm doing that final edit and I'm asking people who have never read my work before to give me feedback. (This isn't an erotic novel by the way. In case you were curious.)

We'll see if she's amenable. So far, the two people I've approached have been very happy to say yes, even though they know it is a REALLY long book. Which is, of course, flattering. (Especially since certain publishers felt disinclined to publish it b/c it was a "really long" book. Gang, the publishing world is SO changing; by the hour; by the minute. Publishers used to want a book to be well-written, to tell a good story and capture an era or have strong characters. I nail those elements pretty much every time. But now, alas, they want books short & sweet as well, or not too deep.) (Unless of course you're already a million-copy seller; then the world's your oyster.) (FYI: The longer a book is, the more paper it requires and if you're a small press, it's not cost-effective to have a longer book printed. Even for the larger houses these days, they want a huge degree of certainty that a book is going to sell and earn them their money back before they risk anything on it.)

Well, allow me to step out of those insane parenthetical phrases I always go zooming off to for some inexplicable reason...

The above stuff is why self-publishing and ebooks are rapidly taking over. The next publishing frontier will be PR people and/or PR companies. Publishers themselves won't necessarily be needed anymore; only the people to get the word out will be needed.

If you're a writer, that's actually a good thing; it means huge conglomerates won't be feeding off your royalties anymore. I'm not even going to tell you the amount of money publishers have made off me, versus the money I made in royalties over the last, let's say 12 years. You'd literally weep for me, gang!! But publishers have been a necessity b/c of their distribution. Now it's rapidly becoming a level playing field, distribution-wise. You, yourself, right now, for a very minimal investment, can get international distribution without even getting up out of your chair. However, you still have to get the word out, internationally, that your book is out there, so, you see, PR is king! Yay!

Come to me for your career solutions! I'm happy to point you down your happy path!!

All right, on that note, I shall begin my work day around here. Only 475 more pages left to edit and then I'm home free! Yippee ki ya yay. But first... a peanut butter sandwich! Okay, enjoy the snow if it's heading your way and thanks for visiting, gang! See ya!
