No joy in Mudville
Not that I have anything against Paul Giamatta, I like him, but I never would have sat through 2 1/2 hours of that show just to see him win an award. And that Gervaise guy, the host, was just appalling on every level.
Although I am really glad that Colin Firth won. (I had already gone to bed, though, for that so I didn't see it.)
That show just mystifies me. The audience seemed to be having a good time drinking and hobnobbing, but watching the actual show made my skin crawl -- so much mean-spirited stuff that was supposed to pass for humor. And some of those men accepting their awards said the darnedest things. Robert De Niro really astounded me. You know, I liked him right up until the minute he got that award and opened his mouth. Wow. Did he forget he was on television? Or is he always that arrogant?
And that red carpet show that was on before it. Right at the end there, before the show started, one of the hosts of the show -- I don't know who she was but she was wearing a red dress -- made a wildly racist comment on the air -- about one of the actresses' dresses being big enough to hide 5 Cubans in and sneak them into the show. You know, really, I just sat there with my mouth hanging open and stared at that TV screen. Who was that classless woman? Made me wonder if she would have said "5 spics" if she hadn't been on television!
There is a reason why I don't watch TV, you know? That awards show nailed most of my reasons. But I really, really thought he was going to win this time. It was so disappointing. And also b/c it was such a waste of 2 1/2 hours.
To think I could have spent those 2 1/2 hours reading more of CD Wright's incredible book, One With Others. The book is a staggering reminder that there are people with class, and grace, and power and brilliance in the world. Though they'll likely never be hosting the Golden Globes.
