Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry!

Well, happy 67th birthday Keith Richards! Yay!

You're probably wondering what that has to do with the title of this blog post.

Well, first of all:

It has to do with the awesome singer, Darlene Love , and her pop hit from the early sixties: Today I Met the Boy I'm Going to Marry .  It is one of those Phil Spector-produced, wall-of-sound hits that I have always loved. (Yes, I am an intensely romantic person and I really, really love old pop songs about getting married. For instance, this one here, and (Going to the) Chapel of Love by the Dixie Cups , and etc., etc.) I think that if I ever, ever meet a boy (preferably not younger than 18, let's say, but only b/c I have uneasy feelings about going to jail) who makes me feel the way those old songs made me feel, then I will probably go ahead and get married again! Why the fuck not???!! Yay! (That said, though, I haven't felt that way about anyone in a really, REALLY long time...but I'm not dead yet.)

Okay, guess what?? I digress!! Yay.

Anyhow. Second of all:

I'm still reading Keith's memoirs, Life (and by the way, if you visit that link, and it also shows you a link to the book What Would Keith Richards Do? Daily Affirmations from A Rock & Roll Survivor, buy that book, too! I own it. It's incredible! It wasn't written by Keith but it is so funny and actually kind of jaw-dropping when it's not funny. It's full of all these actual quotes of things Keith has said over the many, many years, but it's presented as "helpful advice" for dealing with your own problems. It's too priceless! And, frankly, it always ends up being great advice! I'm serious! )

Okay. yes. I digress again. Sorry.

Anyway. Yes, Keith's book is 12,000 pages long (or so it seems) and it is taking me a long time to read because my eyes aren't that great anymore. But I am still loving every minute of it. It is usually the best time of my day/evening -- when everything is sort of coming to a stop and I can just flop down on my bed and read for a while.

He writes about a lot of the music I listened to throughout my teens & early twenties (and it was old music even before I started listening to it) and it has made me feel nostalgic so I have been dragging out lots of old records and putting them on the record player. Little Richard, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Burnett & the Rock & Roll Trio, Gene Pitney, Jerry Lee Lewis (my namesake -- just kidding), some really old Elvis stuff, etc.

This morning, even though it was still dark out and 16 degrees and the world outside was covered in freezing snow, I was gleefully bouncing around inside still in my Christmas PJs blasting Be My Baby by the Ronettes (very similar to that famous opening scene from Scorsese's Mean Streets and yet -- NOT!! Watch this YouTube video, gang!! They wont' let me embed it.)

From The Ronettes, I migrated to several great hits by The Crystals (can anyone beat Da-Do-Ron-Ron for upbeat awesomeness??) And then suddenly remembered Darlene Love and Today I Met the Boy I'm Going to Marry and so that went on the record player next and I played it several times in a row, over & over, and happily wondered if I would ever fall in love again or ever get married...

I like to think I will, gang. We shall see!!
