My review of Good Porn by Erika Lust
Good Porn: A Woman’s Guide
By Erika Lust
Seal Press US$17.95
The goal of Erika Lust’s new book Good Porn is to make porn more accessible to women. This premise kind of astounds me, but it could be one of those instances where I am falling into that generation “gap” because in my world porn has always been accessible (I was a teenager in the 1970s; is that why?). I love porn and have always loved porn -- although I don’t think that most porn qualifies as good porn anymore, regardless of which gender is making it.
That said... If you are a woman who has been skittish about porn, or are a complete novice to the world of porn and perhaps would like to understand it better, this book will be a useful tool for you. It’s a brief history of what you could call female-friendly porn (the film variety, at any rate) and it includes a dictionary of common words used in adult movies. It also includes a guide to the DIY porn of webcams & the Internet, a list of links for watching porn online, a listing of porn film festivals, etc., and quotes from the better-known women who are making porn today. When you’re done reading this book, you are definitely going to know a heck of a lot about present-day porn. (And I’m willing to bet that this will hold true for guys as well as women, so don't be shy, guys!)
Erika Lust is an award-winning filmmaker from Sweden (currently residing in Spain) who makes female-friendly adult films. You can find out more about her and her book by visiting: guidetogoodporn.com And you can buy the book direct from Amazon here.
