Happy happy, joy joy!
Is anyone out there old enough to remember Ren & Stimpy???? I used to love that cartoon.
Of course, I, personally, am singing the Happy Happy, Joy Joy song (see above link to listen to the song but don't stay there -- come back and keep reading this!) because the proof copy of Freak Parade arrived in my mailbox yesterday and I couldn't be happier or more joyful about it. What a great-looking book -- even if I say so myself!! (And then if you actually open it and start reading, it's a double-bonus of happiness & joy! Yay!!)
So, naturally, Jay & I did a great big bunch of celebrating last night. We were celebrating not only the imminent publication of Freak Parade after 5 years of wallowing in no-man's land with it, but also the fact that I seem to have stopped going completely out of mind, at least for the time being. That always makes the home a much happier place to be, doesn't it, gang??? Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home when the crazy lady living in it has quieted down some... (and also when there's wine!)
Last night, we had plenty of wine, so that worked out well!
You know, if you put my last couple of posts together (for instance, Rudolph Valentino as the Son of the Sheik in 1926 and moi in my G-rated version of Harem Girl, 2010) you might get a good idea of where our celebrating took us last night! We went to exotic foreign lands that we discovered upstairs -- who knew? And it involved plenty of candles (as always), and the soundtrack from Alice in Wonderland (Jay's choice this time -- I swear! And it really is a great soundtrack for going to exotic lands, gang), and Son of the Sheik on the VCR with the sound muted (another of Jay's choices -- I swear! Isn't that amazing? That I live with somebody who actually requests Son of the Sheik as the backdrop for going off to exotic lands? Actually, I had wanted to pop in the regular old The Sheik from 1921 -- the more famous of the two Valentino Sheik movies. But Jay insisted on Son of the Sheik. And, to be honest, it is the better of the two films, really. B/c in Son of... Rudy plays both the father and the son Sheiks and appears in scenes together with himself. How's that for really cool technical advances in silent films that most people have either totally forgotten about or were completely ignorant of in the first place??)
I have to say, that even at my advancing age, I'm kind of good at putting "an outfit" together at the very last minute. Of course, it was mostly that great necklace (see photo below) matching earrings (ditto below) a belly chain and a veil (from Paris, no less!!). Suddenly, voila! Harem Girl. Oh, and kohl for the eyes. I have always been seriously into kohl -- being a hardcore Keith Richards fanatic from way back. (And currently, my favorite kohl on the planet , guys and gals, comes from Yves Rocher in France and it is 100% natural. It glides on like nobody's business. It is too cool!!) However, I was lamenting to Jay, as the Harem Girl was smoking a little Pall Mall, that I no longer owned any anklet chains for my ankles or those cool serpent arm bands to wear around (yes) my upper arms.
He was aghast! He said, "Why don't you have them anymore??? What did you do with them???" He was suddenly quite passionate about this subject.
I said, "I gave them to Good Will back in the '90s. I had no idea I would ever want to wear them again."
Then as I smoked some more, I innocently said, "Too bad we don't have a hookah..."
He said, "Don't tell me you gave the hookah to Good Will, too??!!"
"Well, no, I never actually owned a hookah."
Enough said about that. The ravaging of the Harem Girl still went splendidly. And Jay said, "Can we re-enact this at the Capitol Motel?" (An even less auspicious motel than the Brookside, if you can imagine that.) (See some insane post below from around April 17th.) And I, of course, said sure. And then he said, "Can we bring the VCR and watch this movie there, too? I really want to watch this movie at the Capitol Motel."
I was a little taken aback by that request but why the hell not? Why wouldn't I want to take Valentino with me everywhere I go? Life is just getting curiouser and curiouser around here, isn't it gang? Kinda makes you want to hold out for the final reel.
(Valentino's final reel, August 1926)

Oh, for chrissakes!! I can't leave you with that!! Not on this incredibly sunny day!! Take this instead. My favorite photo of Rudy. It's from Son of the Sheik, spring 1926:

Okay! See ya, gang!! And thanks for visiting!
