The summer I turned thirteen

This photo was taken of me in the summer of 1973, just before I turned 13. (My memoir, Manhattan, Mon Amour, starts in the summer of '72, just before I turned 12. I looked pretty much like I look here, except in 1973 I had started tweezing my eyebrows in that intensely 1973 way -- arched.) (In fact, I didn't stop doing it until the magnificent Margaux Hemingway became famous and made thick eyebrows fashionable, finally.) (Bless you, Margaux! Rest in peace.)
