Thursday in New York
Okay, gang. Well. Yesterday was a great day. Aside from the truly lousy view outside my window (see one of my little videos linked below), I love my hotel room. I love the hotel. I thought seriously about upgrading to a better room yesterday but then decided that rather than pay through the nose for a better view, I would put that money toward having a good time with my friends instead.
I spent several hours over lunch with my ex-husband, Wayne. We had such a nice time. He looked great. He hasn't aged a bit. I think that his "being not married to me" suits him really well -- what can I say? He has seen Patti Smith several times lately and is reading her new memoir right now, so we talked about Patti, which was so nice. (I have maybe 2 friends in the entire state of Ohio so it's safe to say that I have no one I can talk to about Patti in that way.)
And then another long-time friend came by the hotel for dinner last night. He and I go way back -- to 1981. He is practically vegan and I am not a big meat-eater, and yet we each ordered steak frites and shared this incredible bottle of pinot noir. We reminisced. We have so many memories that are from right there in midtown. I used to live not far from this hotel -- back in the 1980s. We did a lot of wacky running around together down around here. It involved many chemical stimulants in those days.
After a dinner that lasted 3 1/2 hours, I walked him to the subway, mostly to get outside in the air finally. I was in the hotel all day. After I left him at the subway, it felt really strange to be in the old neighborhood again, alone, at night (midtown at night on a weekday is great -- it is practically deserted). It was a bittersweet feeling. My decision to move out of New York was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. It was not a decision I felt very good about making but sometimes we have to make very hard choices, don't we? Sometimes other people have to come first. Love sometimes simply dictates that.
Well, this morning is all about Rudolph Valentino. I'm going to go swing by some of his old midtown haunts. Get some bracing cold, fresh air. And then come back here and work on Freak Parade edits for a little while.
Hope you're having a bracing morning wherever you are, gang. Thanks for visiting. See ya!
