Not only do bees sleep...
...but they all wake up at the very same time! And I mean, the very same instant.
I have a little paper wasps' nest outside one of my kitchen windows. (Meaning the type of wasp they are, are "paper wasps"; the nest is not made out of paper.) Anyway. This particular window, doesn't ever open so they aren't depriving me of anything. So they just hang out there and have their little wasp-lives while I watch them.
Early in the morning, when the sun is just coming out, they are sound asleep. Totally, completely motionless. Their little antennae to not even so much as tremble. They are completely still.
When I came back from my morning walk, I was dead-heading one of my petuna plants, which is very near to where the wasp nest is. I expected to find the nest pretty much empty, since the morning was already in full swing for every other living creature around. But I looked up at the nest, and there they all were, still sleeping. So strange. But while I continued watching them, one of them suddenly woke up. And just like that, they were all wide awake and started just, you know, getting busy and moving around, like they'd always been there, doing just that very thing.
I looked at my watch and it was 8 o'clock. Too funny! So I guess bees get up at 8.
