The most gorgeous thing I've seen in a long time
Saw Steven Sebring's documentary on Patti Smith today, Dream of Life.
I am not really sure what "die hard" means, where the term comes from. I would call myself a "die hard devotee" of Patti Smith but to be honest, my devotion has nothing to do with dying at all and has everything to do with living. She is one of the very few human beings whose presence on Earth makes me want to live.
Dream of Life was one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. It's a personal assessment, to be sure; totally biased and partial, since I love Patti. But visually speaking, it is also really beautiful to look at. (It won Best Cinematography at Sundance.) I also bought the companion book a few days ago -- it weighs 17 hundred trillion tons but it is awesome.
I was just granted a room today over at redroom.com. (Have you ever applied to be one of their authors? The application process takes hours, literally, and so I had put it off for months...) Anyway. I am going to eventually post a piece there about my devotion to Patti that began in the summer of 1975. It's going to be part of my upcoming full-length memoir, Manhattan, Mon Amour.
I will keep you posted about the post. Meanwhile, if the film comes to your city, you should go see it. Otherwise, get the DVD in 2009.
