Big day around here
That moment I've been waiting for since last summer has finally arrived: today my lawn is getting re-seeded. So this means that next year my neighbors will start loving me again.
No, actually, my lawn this summer, while not perfect (and right now it's growing like crazy because my lawn mower guy broke his knee 3 weeks ago and is still unable to work...), has still looked pretty decent, all things considered. In the side yard, in the spring, I planted wild flowers and then promptly never had a moment to weed them, so they are growing insanely. Honestly, it looks like I planted a crop of corn or something; it really does. On a recent trip through the yard with the girlfriend, she said, "You know, that looks like surghum. That's selling for $12 a bushel, you know. You could make $12 easy, right there."
How very drole; how very amusing.
Then she said, "Hey, look at that. Did you know you had a little statue down in there?"
Yes, I knew...
The backyard is a protected wildlife preserve. Unfortunately, all the weeds growing under the arbor, over by where the swing is, have gotten 100% completely out of control this summer because the new novel has had to come first. But the rest of the backyard has been really great. After the sad little tragedy with one of the baby groundhogs, the other groundhogs eventually moved on. But on any given afternoon, there are chipmunks, squirrels galore, blue jays, cardinals, starlings by the truckload, mourning doves, gold finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, tons of robins, chickadees and dozens of sparrows. And usually by midday, they're all out there at once. It's unbelievable. Along with all kinds of bees, wasps, grasshoppers, and, as has been well-documented in earlier posts, more spiders than you can possibly imagine -- both indoors and out. I have to fill the bird bath twice a day since all the birds and animals drink from it, and usually at the same time, which I find very, very interesting. Although I've noticed that when a blue jay or a starling gets near the bird bath, everybody else immediately clears out.
Well, jeez. I didn't think I was going to go off on that tangent. And now it's getting late around here. I've gotta get moving, gang. But thanks for visiting! Hope you're having a great end-of-the-summer, wherever you are. See ya!
