Another update from Thaddeus Rutkowski in NYC:

Generating Fiction (Developing Characters & Plot)
Thaddeus Rutkowski
Monday 6:45-8:45 PM
(Fiction workshop, though memoir can be presented as well).

What is the story you need to tell? How do you choose characters, decide on a point of view? How do you structure your tale to make it more compelling? In this class, we will answer these questions by exploring sources of inspiration and shaping raw material into more coherent stories or chapters. Writers will be encouraged to develop individual projects and show new pages on a schedule. Weekly exercises will focus on elements of the craft, and substantial class time will be used for constructive critiques of works-in-progress. Experimental approaches and creative nonfiction/memoir also will be welcome. Writers new to the form or honing their work will find a supportive environment here.

Thaddeus Rutkowski holds a B.A. and B.F.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. in fiction writing from The Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of the novels Tetched and Roughhouse. Both books were finalists for an Asian American Literary Award. Credits include four nominations for a Pushcart Prize and publications in The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, Fiction magazine, Fiction International and The New York Times. He has been a fiction writing instructor at Pace University, a guest lecturer at the University of Northern Colorado and a visiting writer at St. Lawrence University. And from Emanuel Xavier, also in NYC:

"
Struggling to get through life on a day-to-day basis, it's so easy to forget I'm considered a modern day "poet" and that my work actually reaches people.  So I was completely surprised when I received an invitation to submit a few of my poems to an online journal, The Other Voices International Project, sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).  I was even more humbled when I realized some of the contributors were literary icons I have long admired (Billy Collins, Jimmy Sanitago Baca).  That said, I sent them my most professional author-like pose (thanks to Derek Storm), three previously published poems and three brand new selections from a forthcoming collection along with a picture of one of my best friends and I taken by another one of my best friends.  It is truly an honor to be part of this project and I hope you check out and enjoy my contributions along with the rest of the journal.
